The Sverdlovsk region is a part of the Ural federal district. The administrative center is the city of Ekaterinburg.

The region is located at the border of Europe and Asia. It is bounded by Chelyabinsk, Kurgan, Tyumen and Perm regions as well as with republics of Komi and Bashkortostan and the Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Region. Sverdlovsk region is the fifth biggest subject of the Russian Federation in terms of population size.

Woods occupy 82.3 % of the whole territory of Sverdlovsk region. Here there are such natural reserves as Visiimsky biosphere reserve, Denezhkin Kamen» and national park Pripyshminskie Bory.
